Canada Digital Nomad Visa: The former Canadian Immigration Minister announced promoting Canada as a destination for digital nomads as a part of the new Tech Talent Strategy in June 2023.
Although this new digital nomad strategy seems to be quite attractive, but there is nothing special about it as of now since IRCC is yet to develop it into a full-fledged strategy.
What is New Digital Nomad Visa of Canada
As per IRCC, a digital nomad is an individual who can work remotely from any location around the globe.
Under Canadian immigration regulations, a digital nomad may relocate to Canada for up to six months while working remotely for their foreign employer with only visitor status.
So this is just a visitor visa for working professionals who are allowed by their respective companies/employers (outside Canada) to work remotely from anywhere in the world.
IRCC’s target is to process visitor visa applications for digital nomads within 2 months of submitting complete application.
These digital nomads who initially enter Canada to work remotely will be able to apply for work permit of up to 3 years if they get a job offer from a Canadian employer.
With this valuable experience, they will also have better odds of applying for Canadian permanent residency under various programs.
IRCC say they are also working (not sure, if they really are) with both public and private partners to determine if additional policies are required to attract digital nomads to Canada.
Canada Digital Nomad Visa Requirements
As of now, there are no specific requirements for digital nomad visa other than the above outlined theoretical information on who may fit this.
Currently, digital nomads can apply for a normal Canada visitor visa with supporting documentation of their current job outside Canada and no objection certificate or proof that their company allows them to work remotely from anywhere in the world.
This may let them fall under the category of digital nomad, but there are no specific or official requirements yet outlined by the IRCC.
Even for a normal visitor or tourist visa, providing proof of your current job makes your case stronger as compared to unemployed individuals outside Canada.
What is digital nomad?
Digital nomads are individuals who travel freely while working remotely via technology and the internet.
Typically, these individuals have few material possessions and work remotely from temporary housing, hotels, cafés, public libraries, co-working spaces, or recreational vehicles, using Wi-Fi, smartphones, or mobile hotspots to access the Internet.
