Studying from outside of Canada and Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has provided updates for international students regarding their ability to study online from their home country.
For the Fall 2023 Term, new and returning international students can study from their home country and remain eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) as long as:
- at least 50 per cent of your program is completed in Canada
- you meet all other PGWP requirements
- your courses are available in flexible or online format
Please note that if your program includes courses with required in-class learning activities (e.g., hybrid or in-person delivery), you must be in Canada and come to campus for your classes. Program delivery information is available on Our Programs page.
These temporary policy changes for PGWP eligibility and studying online end on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2023.
Visit the PGWP Eligibility page for more details.
International Students Awaiting Study Permit Approvals
If you are starting in the Fall 2023 Term and are awaiting study permit approval, you can begin your program from your home country as long as your courses are available in an online or flexible format.
If your study permit is not approved by Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023, students are recommended to take a Leave of Absence before Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024, and continue their second semester when they receive an approved study permit.
